As a teacher or candidate teacher of innovative mathematics are required to always perform discussion of how we gain knowledge about the learning of mathematics in accordance with current trends. As for learning to know the developments in the fact of mathematics, a teacher, lecturer and teacher candidates can do the mathematics education research that will provide many benefits for the renewal of mathematics education.
Research is an activity to gain knowledge called science, done by a certain procedure which is systematic and supported by a methodology which is an assessment of the rules in his method. Approach to mathematics education research can be done in various ways, including quantitative and qualitative research.Quantitative research of mathematics learning relies on the scientific method to find the rules, laws and principles regarding the reality of learning mathematics in school. Qualitative research approaches in mathematics education is essentially the observations of the process of learning mathematics in a mathematics learning environment, interact with it, trying to understand language and interpretation of learning mathematics.
Mathematics Education Research can be described by a hermeneutic circle in which a teacher or a researcher trying to uncover aspects of learning mathematics as a phenomenon or phenomena in the form of facts that can be observed directly or in the form of the potential for development that requires treatment. There are two kinds hermeneutic in mathematics education research, namely realistic hermeneutic and deconstructive hermeneutic.
The scope of mathematics education research can come from a push by researchers to reform mathematics education; in which mathematics education was realized that innovation can be sourced to the conceptual factors, values, pragmatic, empirical and political that the level can be simple or complex.
Judging from the mathematics education research procedures can be implemented with various different emphases, among others, with emphasis on historical, descriptive, developmental, case studies and field research.
In the study of mathematics education research there are some things to consider, among others the nature of school mathematics, mathematical reasoning in school, the nature of students learn mathematics.
Based on the suppression of certain aspects of it by adapting Joyce and Weill (1986), can be developed several models of learning as a context of doing mathematics education research activities. The Classroom Action Research (TOD) is intended to increase professionalism (including subject teachers).
Before learning of mathematics held the teacher should do things as a preparatory step as follows:
Planning for mathematics learning environment
- Determine the necessary teaching resources
- Plan activities that are flexible
- Plan the physical environment of learning mathematics.
- Involve students in creating mathematical learning environment.

Develop students' social environment
- Plan activities to work together.
- Encourage students to appreciate each other.
- Find the feelings of students about mathematics
- To develop mathematical models.
Plan mathematical activities
- Plan mathematical activities are balanced in terms of: material, time, trouble, activities, etc..
- Plan mathematical activities that are open (open-ended)
- Plan activities according to students' abilities.
- Development of mathematical topics.
- Build mental math.
- When and where help students.
- Use a variety of teaching sources
